Parks & Recreation News – February 2019

At the February 4, 2019, meeting of the Board of Commissioners, Commissioner Caudle reported on the recently resurrected Ramseur youth baseball program. Commissioner Caudle has spent much time and energy trying to get the program up and running.  Sadly, as of the night of the meeting, no children had signed up.

As the discussion got underway, Mayor Shaw asked if it might be possible to find some other organization to utilize the fields. Commissioner Caudle responded that someone from Faith Christian School had contacted her and expressed interest in using the fields, located at Leonard Memorial Park, for a softball league. After further discussion the board unanimously passed a resolution allowing that use in exchange for a $15 per week fee and assurances that there would be no scheduling conflicts or lights needed.

*I reached out to Commissioner Caudle shortly before publishing this article, and she informs me that the sign up period has been extended to March 9, 2019. If you need details the Commissioner can be reached by email at, or by calling 336-302-1300.

When it was suggested by the Town Clerk that funds provided by a grant from Dart Container Corporation be used for field maintenance, Commissioner Caudle expressed concerns about making certain that those funds be used  in accordance with the purpose she stated in her grant application.

Commissioner Caudle then apologized for the oversight of not including a girls softball league in her original proposal, but acknowledged that given the lackluster response so far from the community, there might not be enough interest to form a team. She is exploring other options, such as partnering with surrounding communities, so that any children who do sign up will have the opportunity to play, whether we have a team in Ramseur or not.

In other news, the concerts committee will meet at 6pm, Thursday, February 21st, at the home of Norv and Deirdre Kraft, 317 Elam Avenue. The lake committee was scheduled to meet at 8am, Saturday, February 23rd at the lake, but has been rescheduled to 2pm, Sunday, February 24th, due to potential bad weather Saturday. The Fall Festival committee will meet at 6pm, Monday, March 4th at the municipal building. There was also brief discussion about allowing the US Navy Sea Cadets to use Ramseur Lake for an overnight event sometime later this spring., and a resolution to that effect was passed.
